About Chi Park

Hi all and welcome. I would by no means call myself an "industry expert" in mobility, but I do like to get my voice heard from time to time. So I figure, why not here?

Thanks,
Chi

Apple domination, armed with 100% smartphones.

With over a 131% year-over-year growth in sales, the iPhone is enjoying a bright future. The smartphone market is difficult to survive; Carriers brainstorming daily about what they can add to their phones to make it marketable to consumers. Apple is doing something right, according to Changewave research, with the most smartphone users, 73%, satisfied with their device. Their number one product, the iPhone, holds a strong presence with over 151 carries in 88 countries, and don’t expect it to stop there.

Though Apple is restrictive and charges premium for their products, the iPhone is equipped with exceptional service, having a lasting battery life, and functionality of the phone itself. New applications are created every day, and with Apple’s continuous growth, consumers are noticing the increasing mobility and power of the phone. The iPhone is key on customization, and who doesn’t love having their phone fit to their needs? There are so many choices in terms of apps, and ways to make your life, the consumer, easier. Apple proved other smartphones wrong ---  it is the best.

Wake up, and smell the smartphones.

Your coffee and laptop will soon be forgotten. Instead of grabbing a cup of coffee while checking email when you wake up, consumers are now able to get the job done dually with their smartphone. Smartphones have not only taken over the technological world, but also the lives of millions.  The rapid expansion and convenience of smartphones are changing the necessity of owning a laptop device because consumers are able to access virtually any information through their smartphones. Studies show that 49.1 million people in the United States own smartphones, an 8.1% increase from February 2010. Smartphone unit prices, averaged $151 in Q1 2010, which is a 3 percent decrease over the previous year, but it’s a no brainer why consumers are attracted to the versatility of this device; more technology means more options and more convenience.

Each day, these smartphone devices are advancing, and mobile operating systems are battling it out to keep up with the demand of customers and deliver satisfaction.  The iPhone OS has remained the number one choice of major mobile operating systems. But the number of Android based devices sold recently, has enabled Androids OS status to surpass its third place to second place, within a matter of months. The productivity brought into the retail workforce today by smartphones, makes it an inevitable choice over regular mobile phones. It boosts productivity and maximizes efficiency not only in the workplace, but worldwide.

Game Changing. Sent from my iPhone 4.

With revolutionary devices and updates entering the market daily, consumers have high expectations for the world of mobility. The new iPhone 4 will soon be the most valuable asset to retailers and manufacturers. But because mobile and web have been developing at a rapid rate, businesses need to adapt to this new technology upon its arrival. Apple has simply created the groundwork for mobile retailers. How is this of any benefit to the consumer?

Global Bay, which has been perfecting their mobility software solutions, has created applications through Apple’s devices to improve customer satisfaction and increase a business’ success. It’s super simple, grab your iPhone or iTouch, download the app, and you can complete almost any task at ease. Let’s say you’re looking for a present. Global Bay’s interactive mobile gift giving app for Coach, which is available at the Apple store, allows you to maneuver through Coach’s different products. Because it is available on the iPhone, iTouch, or iPad, consumers can access this specific app whenever needed. In terms of functionality, apps like these are convenient to the consumer, being its always ready to use, and is specific to the user, which ultimately increases customer satisfaction.

Apple is continuing to enhance its software, and not only is it changing the growth of the retail industry, but it’s changing the way consumers act. How have applications changed the way you live?

1 iPad App that will further YOUR store's efficiency!

Shopping is a lengthy process. It requires extensive thinking, walking, and effort. What we need in this modern day world, is a device that will cut the time consumers waste in stores, and improve overall efficiency.

The device, has heard its calling. The iPad has reached over two million hands around the world, and is revolutionizing the retail market. Experienced developers have created this device, and in turn, retailers have leveraged its media and technology capabilities. But what about the application?

Global Bay has developed software to boost customer relationship between businesses through the iPad. Upon entering the store, the iPad will recognize a customer, and recall all of their past transactions. The sales associate will then be able to assist the consumer more efficiently, and suggest options based on their past purchasing history.  The application offers an individual analysis of each customer, their history of purchases, and other important information.  Consumers can interact with a virtual wardrobe that displays a wish list and product locator, satisfying all their buying needs. With the new iPad and its remarkable functionality, shopping can now be easy again, making everyone happy.

3 MUST HAVE options for Enterprise Class Mobile PC's

It's nearly 2010, and I just realized I have been doing the "mobility" thing for nearly 6 years now. Wow. Seems like just yesterday we were taxing the hell out of Palm M505 devices to do amazing data collection things...

Fast forward to 2009 - and it's a whole new ball game. Lot's of new competition....some strong...some ready to turn off the lights...and life goes on...

Which brings me to my point: over the past 6 years, what seems to be the most "MUST HAVE" item/functions/options that any enterprise class project regarding mobile needs? Check it out (in no particular order):

 1. Bluetooth.  You need this for connectivity to peripherals people! Whether it be a printer, headset...etc. You would be a fool to procure any hardware without this option.  Luckily, nearly EVERY device on the market supports this. If you are one of those types that prefer to procure "older" hardware to keep costs low, then that is fine - but if it's missing bluetooth - then you are p*ssing your money away.

 2. 3G/HSDPA/EVDO.  Chances are, you have been looking at commercial devices that carriers provide for the low cost (which admittedly, is very attractive) and the obvious fact of next-gen wireless data support. That is fine and dandy, but did you know that nearly every enterprise class mobile PC provider has models that support this same feature? Case in point: Motorola MC75 - the flagship device of the former Symbol Technologies team. Comes in many different carrier flavors for all your mobile data needs.

 3. Full Qwerty Keyboard: Time and time again, I see prospects and customers decide not to spurge on the full keyboard option.  What happens next? If it's not plainly obvious: lower acceptance rate among field reps. Cmon people, it's hard enough users to use current desktop/laptop technology - let alone adopt a mobile device. Keep it as simple and similar as possible - and the experience will be less ugly.

Google Barcode Tribute

Wow - was kinda amazed when I logged on sometime around 12AMish EST this morning....

Google has a barcode above it's homepage search and it got me thinking: Damn, I have been in this business way too long.

As a Motorola Channel Manager - I "speak" barcode all day...and I mean "all day".  For the past 3 some years or so, GB has an organization has been infiltrating (I like to call it casual bothering) the Motorola landscape.  Which of course, eventually resulted in us being ISV of the Year (that's all my doing btw!).

I've seen shops come and go...and I've seen solutions transform over time to keep up with the need of rapid, more demanding communication and real-time interaction.

My question is: what's next?  Someone once said RFID is goin to be the next best thing...but now I disagree.  It was "hot" for a second - but barcodes (or something similar) seem to be the tried/proven method.  Especially for smaller firms who are looking to automate their supply chain.

What you guys think? What's "hot"? ala Paris Hilton.
